Fentanyl Crisis Fentanyl is fueling a deadly crisis across our communities. This synthetic opioid is up to 100 times stronger than morphine, and just a few grains can kill. Dealers often mix it into pills and powders without warning, making every use a life-or-death risk. Overdoses are rising at alarming rates, tearing families apart and devastating neighborhoods. Awareness and prevention are critical — knowing the signs, spreading the word, and protecting our loved ones can save lives. Did you Know? Just 2 milligrams of fentanyl (about the size of a few grains of salt) can be deadly. Over 150 people die every day in the U.S. from overdoses related to synthetic opioids like fentanyl. Many fake prescription pills sold on the street contain fentanyl without the user knowing. Where to Report? Call 911 immediately in the event of an overdose or medical emergency. Local Police Department – Report suspicious activity or drug distribution in your neighborhood. Crime Stoppers – Submit anonymous tips about fentanyl sales or trafficking. DEA Tip Line – Report suspected drug activity online at www.dea.gov/submit-tip. Poison Control (1-800-222-1222) – Get immediate guidance if exposure or ingestion is suspected. Domestic Violence Domestic violence refers to any behavior that involves the use of physical, emotional, or sexual force or the threat of such force within an intimate relationship. It can take many forms, including physical or verbal abuse, controlling, and financial abuse. Domestic violence is a serious issue that affects individuals and families from all walks of life. Domestic Violence Prevention Understanding and having knowledge of the many types of abuse as well as the various ways that abuse appears, and interconnects can prepare you to respond to situations safely for yourself and others. Possible signs of abuse: Physical Abuse – punch, slap, kick, bite, choke, use of weapons against you, driving dangerously with you in the car, preventing you from leaving, throwing objects at you, denying you necessary medical treatment. Emotional and Verbal Abuse – constant name calling or criticizing, acting possessive, isolation from friends and family, monitoring your activities without your knowledge, gaslighting, humiliation, attempting to maintain sole control over what you wear or do, blame, accusations, damaging belongings. Sexual Abuse – insults you in a sexual manner, forcing or manipulating you into sexual acts without consent, ignores your feelings, intentionally pass on a STD/STI. Sexual Coercion – reacting negatively if you say “no”, continuous pressure to give in after saying “no”, giving you drugs or alcohol to “loosen up”, implying you owe them something sexually for a gift, or action. Financial Abuse – denying access to your money, closely monitored allowance, maxing out credit cards / open accounts in your name without permission, refusing to contribute in the household or provide money for necessities or shared expenses. Digital Abuse – controlling who you can follow, what you can post, who you can talk to, sending toxic or threatening emails or texts, demanding passwords, checking your phone, using GPS to monitor and track location, impersonating you online to get you in trouble or embarrass you, making you feel like you can be separated from your phone due to angering them. Did You Know? Domestic violence reports increased by 10% between 2019 and 2020 (NCADV, 2022). Nearly 3 in 10 women (29%) and 1 in 10 men (10%) in the US have experienced rape, physical violence, and/or stalking by a partner and reported it having a related impact on their functioning. Just under 15% of women (14.8%) and 4% of men in the US have been injured as a result of intimate partner violence that included rape, physical violence, and/or stalking by an intimate partner. Back to School As summer nears the end and children are getting ready to head back to school it is important to have ongoing conversations that will help keep them safe and healthy throughout the school year. Did You Know? More than 15,000 children ages 19 and under were struck and injured by a vehicle as pedestrians in 2018. (Safe Kids Worldwide, 10/2020) It is estimated that 8 to 10 percent of all school children exhibit school refusal behavior — and miss school as a result — at some point during their school career. That number bumps up to 28 percent when you add in students who resisted going to school but ultimately made it in the door. (“Refusal: A Large Number of Kids Just Say No to School” K-12 Daily.) Studies show that splitting attention between lecture and cellphone or laptop use hinders long-term retention, and those in class suffer from others’ use of devices. (Arnold L. Glass & Mengxue Kang (2019) Dividing attention in the classroom reduces exam performance, Educational Psychology) Where to Report Report Anonymously to Crime Stoppers at 1-800-SPEAKUP Mental Health America, 24-hour Crisis Center – 1-800-273-8255 or text MHA to 741741 NCMEC Cyber Tipline, 24 hours, 1-800-843-5678 or report.cybertip.org Articles ADT - Back to School Safety American Academy of Pediatrics - Back-to-School Tips for Families American Academy of Pediatrics - 5 Ways to Help Your Kid Have a Healthy School Year American Red Cross - Safety Checklist to Follow as Students Head Back to School CDC - Back to School Safety Tips CDC - Back to School: Ideas for Parent Involvement Just Ask Children's - How to Ease the Transition and Ace the School Year KidsHealth - Going Back to School National Highway Traffic Safety Administration - Back to School: Keeping Children Safe National PTA - School Safety National Safety Council - Back to School Safety Checklist National Safety Council - Slow Down: Back to School Means Sharing the Road PBS Kids - Back to School Tips Psychology Today - Back to School Parenting Scholastic Parents - Back to School: START SMART!
