Still looking for leads after 11 years pass of Lansings most notorious murder case
May 1, 2013 Lansing, MI. On Saturday, June 23, 2001, Lansing resident Bernita White was killed by a bullet from a high-powered rifle while walking from the picnic pavilion to the zoo entrance at Potter Park Zoo. The incident took place at 3:15 p.m. at South Pennsylvania Avenue and Potter Park Road in the city of Lansing.
Mrs. White and her daughter were attending a birthday party for a family member. Mrs. White was walking with her 5-year-old daughter , Michala, from the pavilion to the entrance when she was shot. A bullet hit her in the left arm and pierced her heart. The bullet was never found.
On the day of the murder, there were over 300 people visiting the zoo. Several others were visiting playgrounds and picnic areas around the zoo. Shortly after 3 p.m. a loud shot was heard near the zoos west entrance. ᅠᅠ

Mrs. White was 41 years old.ᅠ At the time of her death she had two daughters Michala and Alanna, 5 and 7. Mrs. White had filed for divorce a month before the shooting took place. She was working at Electronic Data Systems Corporation in Lansing. Mrs. White was described as a devoted mother who was loved by everyone. She enjoyed baking, scrap booking and spending time with her family. She was born in Detroit and moved to Lansing after she married her husband. ᅠWhen Bernitas mother was informed about her murder, she had a heart attack and died the same night.

Crime Stoppers of Michigan is offering a cash reward of up to $2,500 for information that leads to an arrest. If the tip that leads to an arrest is received by midnight of the day of the press conference there is an additional $1,000 reward for a total of $3,500. Anyone who has information regarding the crime should call Crime Stoppers of Michigan at 1-800-SPEAK-UP or 1-800-773-2587. All calls and cash rewards are completely anonymous.

You will NOT be at risk.ᅠᅠ If you contact Crime Stoppers, you will be absolutely safe -- because you will be completely and utterly anonymous.ᅠᅠ No one -- not us, not the police -- no one will know your identity.ᅠ There will never be any need for you to testify in court -- because no one will ever know who you are.ᅠ

At Crime Stoppers, we are obsessive about anonymity.ᅠ In fact, here is a short-list of the precautions we take.ᅠ There are no CallerID phones at Crime Stoppers.ᅠ Phone calls to our 1800 SPEAKUP number go to a call center in Canada -- they arent handled locally, they arent even handled in the US.ᅠ Calls are never recorded.ᅠ Callers are never asked for their name, their phone number -- or any kind of identifying information.ᅠ

We cannot bring a murdered family member home.  But we can bring justice to a community and closure to the family. We can galvanize our community to create safe neighborhoods where children can play outside and walk to school without fear, where neighbors talk with each other instead of closing their doors and hiding inside -- and where a community, together, can rise up and speak up to put an end to violence.
